A Collection of 1950s Air Force Cartoons and the Stories Behind Them

On The Double!

Phil Kantz, my father, served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956. His last post was at Erding Air Station approximately 27 miles southwest of Munich, where he published the military cartoons he had collected in a small volume called On the Double! The book was sold in U.S. military PXs throughout Europe.

The following pages contain the entirety of On the Double!, but they are reorganized around specific aspects of military life, the life of a young man taking some early steps into the world, and the way the world looks today by comparison.

As with any decades-long passage of time, the world has changed in so many ways since my father put ink to paper. I also have the added benefit of knowing the man and artist that my father would become, so I couldn’t objectively republish this work in its original form without reflecting on the ways the world has changed, and I couldn’t effectively give On the Double! its due without weaving the story of my father’s life around it.

Welcome to On the Double!

Two Ways to Enjoy On the Double!

Just Look at the Pictures

They’re mostly goofy, and many of them are dated and therefore not as funny as they were back in the 1950s. But I’m confident they’ll give you a smile.
